  • Description

This steel owl weathervane, mounted on a double arch ridge tile, serves as an elegant and distinctive decorative element. Enhancing the roof with its artistic presence, this functional weathervane offers more than just an aesthetic touch. Crafted from steel, it stands as an exquisite owl finial decoration that can truly transform the roofs appearance.

Incorporating both beauty and functionality, the owl weathervane showcases a fully operational design, with the owl gracefully pivoting in response to the wind's direction giving an indicator of the prevailing breeze. The ridge tile fitting comes in a standard terracotta colour, a range of alternative hues and finishes are available to choose from.

Standing at an impressive height of 38" (97cm), the weathervane's fitting is tailored for a double arch ridge tile fitting. The ridge base is a 45 degree angle tile and measures 12" (296mm) in length and 9" (225mm) in width.

Why opt for this weathervane over a bracket-mounted alternative? The consideration for maintaining a watertight roofing system often deters installers from drilling holes and affixing brackets. The installation process for this owl weathervane, however, is straightforward and hassle free. The ridge base can be seamlessly integrated into the roof using mortar, ensuring a secure and stable attachment. Additionally, the weathervane offers an optional mechanical fix fitting in the form of a metal strap that can be cut to size. This strap has a series of holes and screws or nails can be used to fix it to the roof. The strap can be later hidden from view when ridge base is installed using traditional mortar

Customers can easily incorporate these owl ridge weathervanes onto various roof types from gable ends and hip ends to houses, cottages, sheds, workshops, and even summer houses. The weathervane's adaptability extends beyond roofing, finding a place as an ornamental feature within garden landscapes. Its versatility adds intricate detailing and captivating charm to both rooftops and outdoor environments, making it a perfect choice for those seeking to elevate their surroundings with a touch of captivating allure.

  • How to fit and install

There are several ways to install roof finials, as outlined below:

    Traditional mortar bedding:

Roof finials can be installed following the same method used for ridge tiles, utilising standard mortar bedding. In cases where the finial is tall or heavy, or if enhanced stability is desired, an additional mechanical fix method can be employed alongside the mortar bed installation.

Mechanical fixing strap and mortar bedding:

For this type of install, a galvanized metal strap is included, discreetly fastened to the underside of the finial ridge base during manufacturing. This durable and flexible metal strap can be adjusted in length by cutting it down to size. Featuring a series of holes, the strap can be screwed, nailed, or embedded in mortar to anchor it to a section of the roof structure. After securing the metal strap, installers can conceal it from sight by applying traditional mortar bed. The mortar used to join the finial with adjacent ridge tiles effectively conceals the strap, resulting in a seamless and neat appearance.

    Dry fixing:

Another approach to affixing finials to the roof involves the dry fixing method. This technique involves using a specific manufacturer's dry fixing system, typically incorporating brackets or alternative mechanical fasteners to attach ridge tiles and finials to the roof without the use of mortar. If you are considering a dry fix ridge system, please get in touch with us to determine if this finial design can be adapted to be compatible with your chosen system.
