Horse weathervane mounted on a half round roof ridge
This copper verdigris horse weathervane on a half round roof ridge will add a unique and beautiful touch to your home's exterior. It's a stunning option for those looking to add a special touch to their roof with a finial. This weathervane is both aesthetically pleasing and fully functional, as its horse spins in the wind to indicate which way the wind is blowing.
We supply the ridge tile fitting in the traditional terracotta colour, and also provide it in a variety of other colours and finishes.
The weathervane is a good size for the roof ridge, coming in at a total of 31.5 inches (80cm) in height. The base of the half round ridge is 10 inches (24 cm) wide, 12 inches (30 cm) long, and 8 inches (20.5 cm) high.
Concerns or hassle with drilling holes or installing brackets on the roof or inside the roof space are alleviated as installing this horse weather vane is a breeze. The half round roof ridge fitting can be set in place with mortar, making installation quick and simple.
In addition, a strong yet flexible metal strap can be used to mechanically secure the weathervane. Uncoiling this strap and cutting it to size reveals a pattern of holes that facilitates fastening it to the roof via screws, nails, or other means. The metal strap can be fastened and hidden during the traditional mortar installation of the ridge base. The installation of the ridge will be more secure and steady thanks to this extra feature.
These horse ridge weathervanes are versatile and can be mounted on a variety of roofs, including gable ends, hip ends, homes, cottages, sheds, workshops, and even summer homes. Its adaptability is further highlighted by the fact that it can also serve as a garden ornament if so desired. This weathervane is a great way to draw attention to your roof while also showcasing intricate details.
- How to fit and install
There are several ways to install roof finials, as outlined below:
Traditional mortar bedding:
Roof finials can be installed following the same method used for ridge tiles, utilising standard mortar bedding. In cases where the finial is tall or heavy, or if enhanced stability is desired, an additional mechanical fix method can be employed alongside the mortar bed installation.
Mechanical fixing strap and mortar bedding:
For this type of install, a galvanized metal strap is included, discreetly fastened to the underside of the finial ridge base during manufacturing. This durable and flexible metal strap can be adjusted in length by cutting it down to size. Featuring a series of holes, the strap can be screwed, nailed, or embedded in mortar to anchor it to a section of the roof structure. After securing the metal strap, installers can conceal it from sight by applying traditional mortar bed. The mortar used to join the finial with adjacent ridge tiles effectively conceals the strap, resulting in a seamless and neat appearance.
Another approach to affixing finials to the roof involves the dry fixing method. This technique involves using a specific manufacturer's dry fixing system, typically incorporating brackets or alternative mechanical fasteners to attach ridge tiles and finials to the roof without the use of mortar. If you are considering a dry fix ridge system, please get in touch with us to determine if this finial design can be adapted to be compatible with your chosen system.
