  • Description

This steel horse weathervane elegantly adorns a double arch ridge tile, creating a distinctive and captivating embellishment for your roof. Crafted from sturdy steel, this weathervane not only serves as a decorative element but also offers a functional purpose. The horse gracefully turns with the wind, serving as an indicator of the wind direction. The ridge tile fitting, which comes in a standard terracotta by default works with most roofs however alternative colours and finishes are available to suit your aesthetic preferences.

With an overall height of 39 inches (99 cm), the weathervane is mounted on a ridge base with a 45 degree angle. The ridge base measures 12 inches (296 mm) in length and 9 inches (225 mm) in width.

Considering the need to maintain the roof's waterproof integrity, alternative installation methods are explored beyond standard weathervane brackets. Drilling holes and attaching brackets to the roof or its interior may compromise its water resistant properties. The installation process for this horse weathervane circumvents such concerns, offering a hassle free approach. The weathervane is securely affixed to the roof using mortar to secure the ridge base. There is also a mechanical fix option available in the form of a metal strap. This strap can be cut down to size and secured in place using screws, nails, or other means. The strap's concealment beneath the ridge base during installation ensures a nice appearance.

The versatility of these horse ridge weathervanes is handy because they can enhance a variety of roof styles, including gable ends, hip ends, houses, cottages, sheds, workshops, and summer houses. Their adaptability extends beyond roofs as they can be placed within gardens for ornamental purposes, contributing an engaging focal point.

  • How to fit and install

There are several ways to install roof finials, as outlined below:

    Traditional mortar bedding:

Roof finials can be installed following the same method used for ridge tiles, utilising standard mortar bedding. In cases where the finial is tall or heavy, or if enhanced stability is desired, an additional mechanical fix method can be employed alongside the mortar bed installation.

Mechanical fixing strap and mortar bedding:

For this type of install, a galvanized metal strap is included, discreetly fastened to the underside of the finial ridge base during manufacturing. This durable and flexible metal strap can be adjusted in length by cutting it down to size. Featuring a series of holes, the strap can be screwed, nailed, or embedded in mortar to anchor it to a section of the roof structure. After securing the metal strap, installers can conceal it from sight by applying traditional mortar bed. The mortar used to join the finial with adjacent ridge tiles effectively conceals the strap, resulting in a seamless and neat appearance.

    Dry fixing:

Another approach to affixing finials to the roof involves the dry fixing method. This technique involves using a specific manufacturer's dry fixing system, typically incorporating brackets or alternative mechanical fasteners to attach ridge tiles and finials to the roof without the use of mortar. If you are considering a dry fix ridge system, please get in touch with us to determine if this finial design can be adapted to be compatible with your chosen system.
