Proctors finial restoration kirkton of skene aberdeenshire
This was a special roof finial restoration job done for proctors (a former children's home) in Kirkton of Skene, Aberdeenshire
The proctors building lay in quite a bad state of repair and when a contract was awarded for the refurbishment the roof was in much need of restoration. The roof featured some block end finials, most were in poor condition and some completely broken or missing. The customer got in contact with us to see if it was possible to restore an original broken finial and make a mould of it so that replica finials could be reproduced
After accepting our quote the customer sent us down a complete roof finial which comprised of the Ridge base and the roof finial crest head. The Ridge base and crest head had separated from each other and the roof finial as a unit was in need of repair. The Ridge tile base especially, had weathered and was a little misshapen, and had some mortar on the underside of it
Apart from the obvious damage there were hairline cracks and quite large chips of damage to the ridge tile base and the finial crest head. The workshop made good the damage by sanding and filling the cracks and doing repairs to restore the proportions of the roof finial
The crest head and the ridge base was given an acid bath to clean off years of algae and moss. They were then fitted back together to repair the finial and to make a masterpiece from which a good mould could be cast. The pictures below show the mould making process for both the crest head and the ridge tile base
